The Things We Do For Love

An insidious hush settled over the crew of the leviathan. They found themselves jumping at shadows--ready to fight or flee from the slightest threat of danger.

Aeryn watched Crichton nervously--unseen from her position behind a row of towering cargo crates. Curious as to whom he could possibly be talking to Aeryn was startled when a sudden burst of laughter echoed around the cargo bay. Sighing Aeryn peeped around the crates to see who he was with. "Oh no." She muttered swearing silently. There was no one there. Crichton was having one of his episodes again.

"Check Mate!" John shouted. Scorpius studied the chess pieces before bowing his head slightly in concession to his defeat.

"Yes...it would appear that you have won this round--but John...don't forget it was only--one round. Hmmmm."

"Pompous bastard," John swore as Scorpius faded from view. John's hand hovered, suddenly uncertain, over a chess piece.

"Why the hell am I in the cargo bay?" John's fear was etched on his face, his eyes scanned his surroundings wildly--unseeing. His thoughts turned inward searching for an answer. Bile rose in his throat, his inner search only lead to more internal turmoil. How had he ended up here instead of his quarters? He specifically remembered wanting to rest after his shift at command had ended.

Small beads of sweat slid ominously down his nose, irritating him. A low pitiful moan slipped past his lips. He stood quickly! His wild movements knocked over the table and broke several of the delicate chess pieces D'Argo had carved for him. He had lost everything...and now in the back of his mind the fear that he was loosing the only thing he had left--his mind--was consuming him.

***

Aeryn wanted to reach out to him. To hold him until the confusion and fear were gone. She had seen him come out of his delusional states several times and each time the fear became worse his behavior more erratic and violent.

She shuddered as he began to throw crates, small tools, and spare parts around the cargo bay. Aeryn covered her mouth with her fisted hand biting on her palm as she smothered the sobs threatening to overcome her. His pain, fear, and feelings of hopelessness--were hers to bear as well--because she loved him.

A love that frightened her so much she kept it hidden from the one person who needed it the most...her beloved--John.

Zhaan watched the agitated peacekeeper pace the medical bay nervously as she gathered her strewn thoughts.

"Zhaan he's getting worse--and I don't know what to do to help him."

"Calm down Aeryn. We will think of something. Everyone has seen the changes in John. It frightens all of us. Funny how he has come to mean so much to each of us--in such a short period of time," she mused.

Zhaan pressed several buttons bringing a large holograph of John to life in the center of the medical bay. They both watched intently as layers of the holograph faded leaving his brain and nervous system highlighted.

"Since John's arrival--I have been collecting data every monen on his health to have something to go by should he become ill. According to this he began to have some electrical impulses in his brain misfiring approximately 3 monen ago..."

Aeryn interrupted Zhaan, the color in her face draining..."Three monen ago--Gamek base. This smells of Scorpius."

"I agree. However I can find nothing wrong with his brain chemically that could be causing these misfiring. They also appear to coincide with his episodes of dementia."

"What about a physical anomaly? Have any of his brain cells changed?" Aeryn asked warily, circling the holograph watching it intently as it cycled through each month.

Zhaan looked probingly at Aeryn. Her question seemed to hint at something more, something sinister. Walking back to the controls she manipulated the holograph and programmed in a series of tests searching for a physical change in any of John's millions of brain cells. Satisfied the tests were underway correctly she nodded to Aeryn.

"I have programmed it to search each of his brain cells for physical changes as compared to a holograph prior to his meeting Scorpius. What are we looking for Aeryn?" "Trust me Zhaan. You'll know it when you see it! When I left the peacekeepers it was just a rumor, a myth...at least we thought it was a myth," she finished lamely. "But what is IT, Aeryn!" Zhaan demanded.

"There were rumors about a new weapon that gave Peacekeeper Command to control of planet leaders so quickly after arriving at the planet's request to stop civil wars or uprisings. A weapon that worked from inside the leader it was injected into brain. I know it sounds fantastic...but if it's not a rumor if it is fact--then I think Scorpius has placed one of these devices inside of John's mind so he can control John..."

"...and thus control the wormhole technology in his brain." Zhaan finished for her. "By the Goddess! Why wouldn't the scans pick up such a foreign object? Why hasn't his body rejected it?" Zhaan looked at Aeryn skeptically.

"Because...to his body it isn't foreign at all. The rumor was that they take some of your brains tissue and bind your genetic information with RNA memory encoded from a loyal officer. This encoding or "program" is able to eavesdrop, steal memories, suppress memories, or create memories. They even said it could stop all brain functions if it was threatened and take total control of the body of its host in order to pass on vital information or to escape. We laughed at the rumors. It was too fantastical. But then again until we met John--so was the thought of creating waste funnels."

Zhaan continued programming data into the console. Satisfied she motioned for Aeryn to follow her.

"It will take several arn for the program to run. In the meantime I want you to keep an eye on John. Don't tell the others. If they know one of them might accidentally tell John and alert this thing. If it is there--as John would say, 'All hell will break loose.' if it knows that we are trying to eradicate it. Aeryn now is the time for you to tell him you love him." Zhaan held up her hand to silence the protests about to come. "I know how you feel about John. We all do. There is no shame or weakness in loving someone. There is pain, it is as much a part of love as any thing else, you need to get past your fears and training and embrace what time you have...we don't know what will happen if we find this neural implant and we try to remove it...tell him!"

Zhaan walked away gracefully, leaving Aeryn alone with her indecision, her fear, and her love for John.

***

"I'm telling you D'Argo--Crichton is insane. He is talking to himself more and more of late and he barely touches his food."

D'Argo scoffed at the Hynerian's observations a fierce snarl on his face his brow furrowed.

"Rygel if anyone aboard has a reason to be insane it's John. He was stripped of everything he had and thrown into utter chaos the day that waste funnel dropped him here. He has survived Crais, Scorpius's aurora chair, and being turned into a statue as well as Maldis's attempts on his and all of our lives. So if he is talking to himself maybe it is because there are no other humans to talk to and it makes him feel closer to his home world. He has save all our lives more than once so let it rest Rygel."

Having had his say D'Argo turned and left Rygel to his suspicions.

***

John lay on his bed staring at the ceiling of his room. He was so tired but he was afraid to fall asleep. Something was wrong in his head...he could sense it. Maybe D'Argo stunned him one time to many with that defensive tongue of his, maybe Aeryn kicked him one time too many in the head while training in the recreation room...

"Or just maybe you have finally lost it Johnny boy!" Scorpius whispered from the corner of his mind.

"Shut the hell up!" John yelled, jumping to his feet, and covering his ears--unable to shut out the sinister laughter that followed.

"What the hell is happening to me," John implored to the empty room. Defeated, weary to the bone, John dropped to his knees in defeat his body shaking as the weight of his plight in the Uncharted Territories closed in around him.

I am alone there's no one out there who knows--what I'm going through. No one--like me--to talk to, no one who is going through what I am going through. If I told the others what is happening to me they would either kick me off Moya or lock me in one of those cells and forget about me. I can't take that chance. Aeryn. Oh baby! How can I teach you how to love and trust me, if I can't trust myself? Oh-- God...I feel like I'm loosing myself....

John let go--the despair, lonliness, and utter helplessness began to tumble from the depths where they had been held imprisoned since the first day he was thrust unwanted into the Uncharted Territories. Unable to hold back the fear and pain that had tormented his every waking thought, that haunted his dreams, that stalked him along the corridors of Moya's passages he let go--and for the first time since he unceremoniously landed in the Uncharted Territories he allowed himself to cry--for all that he had lost, would lose, and would most likely never know again.

*****

Aeryn listened to the faint sobs coming from inside John's quarters. Her hand hovered uncertainly over the COM--she didn't know whether if she should interrupt him or not. The gods only knew she had days when she wanted to do the same thing but conditioning forced her to hold it in. Listening to the proud human exposing his emotions in such a way pulled at her heart--awaking a nurturing instinct long buried beneath Peacekeeper training and duty. Shrugging she entered his quarters surprising him. He made no effort to hide his tears--if anything the pleading look on his face and in his eyes drew her down to the floor in front of him.

"It's okay John. I'm here." Aeryn told him, her voice soft, soothing, inviting.

"Aeryn, baby...I...," another sob wracked him leaving him speechless again.

Aeryn opened her arms to him and drew him into an awkward embrace--carefully she scooted backwards until her back was against John's bed and coaxed him into lying on his back, his head resting on her lap. She stroked his hair while saying soothing things to him...eventually--he drifted off to sleep.

Aeryn's eyes widened in shock as she finally realized that John's quarters were a wreck. Everything that could be broken was...everything else was scattered around in disarray. She looked down at the man sleeping in her lap and longed to cradle him in her arms. He was in so much pain....

"Damn you Scorpius," she whispered. She strained to lift John's upper body and scooted down until her head rested on the edge of his bed, eventually...she too was claimed by fatigue and sleep.

******

John groaned and rolled over onto his side. "Damn bed is getting more uncomfortable each passing day," he thought, opening his eyes; squinting into the darkness. He sighed and tried to re-adjust his pillow, slowly realizing that what he held in his hand was a warm, toned, feminine shaped thigh. Jerked awake by his discovery he snatched his hand away and bolted to his knees, searching the darkness for his companion--who was snoring delicately. John searched the shadows near his bed and breathed a shallow sigh of relief as he recognized softly lit profile. He tried to remember how she had come to be there and drew a blank. For her to want to stay with him until he was asleep it must have been important he mused.

He stood, picked her up, and laid her carefully on his bed. John adjusted the lighting slightly so that he could watch Aeryn as she slept. He smiled when another light snore wheezed past her parted lips. Resisting the urge to reach out and move her head to stop her snoring he knitted his fingers together and was content to just watch.

"Johnnnnn--," Aeryn moaned in her sleep suddenly restless--her head rolling from side to side, fingers clutching the sheets of his bed, small mewing moans slid past her full lips. John's swallowed hard and did a double take as he realized that Aeryn was dreaming about him. A part of him wanted to jump her bones and join her in the dream she was having, another part of him wanted to leave the room, while yet another was stroking his ego telling him she wants you John all you have to is just reach out and touch someone.

John reached out tentatively and swept several strands of Aeryn's hair away from her face. She was so beautiful and desirable. He sighed and pulled his hand away surprised when her lightening fast reflexes stopped him. She grabbed his wrist and began to twist it forcing him from the chair to his knees by the bedside.

"What are you up to Crichton!" Aeryn growled. "Why were you touching my face and how did I get onto your bed!" She demanded bending his wrist back farther causing excruciating pain to race up his arm.

"Damn it Aeryn...get a grip." John hissed between clenched teeth. "I was only moving your hair out of your face for Pete's sake."

"Who is this Pete?" Aeryn asked him, releasing his wrist. John rubbed his aching wrist for several seconds flexing it and wiggling his fingers before answering her.

"Pete is a nobody," he muttered.

"Wait a minute. You just said...Oh! I get it," she smiled, "It's another one of your sayings from Erp isn't it?"

"Yeah, whatever." John answered her tersely. He really wasn't in the mood for an Earth lecture on clichés and euphuisms right now. A minute ago he had been in seventh heaven watching the woman he loved dream about him. Now he was in pain-- caused by that same woman--and he needed a way out.

"John we need to talk." Aeryn told him, her voice dropped--the tone wary, she adjusted her position and sat cross-legged on the bed. "Come sit." She patted the spot beside her on the bed and moved over giving him enough room to sit down beside her.

Pushing her hair from her eyes she took a deep breath and blew it out before facing John.

"Lately, things have been--umm different between us. So different that--how to put this? I find myself worrying about you more than before. Do you understand what I am saying?" She asked looking for some sign of comprehension in his demeanor. She sighed and searched for a way to tell him again that she cared for him and was worried about him without actually "telling" him she cared for him.

"So...what is it exactly you are worried about?" John asked her, laughing nervously. He scooted farther away from her as the inklings of a headache began to form near his temple. Rubbing the bridge of his nose in a vain attempt to ward it off he waited for her to continue.

"Well...you know lately you have been not quite yourself." Aeryn told him avoiding eye contact with him.

John's head snapped up. His eyes were piercing right through her. Their intensity was so disturbing, so unlike the John she knew. Aeryn sensed for a moment it wasn't John at all looking back at her. Those eyes--something about his eyes--the color was all wrong, they changed so quickly she thought she might have imagined it altogether--that look--Scorpius, her brained screamed over and over.

John shook his head, rubbing his temples vigorously.

"John are you okay?" Aeryn lifted John's chin meeting his eyes in horror as blood poured from his nose. "Oh--frell!" she cursed as John's eyes rolled back into his head and he slipped into unconsciousness.

******

D'Argo laid John's inert form down gently on the exam table. He stood solemnly beside the bed with the others as Zhaan began a series of tests with Aeryn at her side.

"Thank you D'Argo, but that will be all for now." Zhaan told him tersely.

D'Argo looked at her suspiciously before spinning on his heal and leaving the room. Something was up. They had made him promise not to tell the others of the human's sickness. Blood was everywhere. Pouring from John's nose, ears, and mouth along with a clear liquid oozing from his ears. He stepped over several drd's intent on cleaning up the trail of blood that led from John's quarters to the medical bay. Cursing, feeling helpless for not being able to help John he kicked an unlucky drd as it whizzed past.

"Ka' D'Argo!" Pilot's angry voice screeched over his COM. "I would appreciate it if you would stop abusing drd's when you have no outlet for your anger." The symbiot told him none to gently.

"Ahh--ahh shove it!" D'Argo exclaimed stalking back to his quarters, hoping Chiana would still be asleep in bed where he had left her earlier. The way he was feeling she wouldn't be for long. The only way he could get rid of his aggression was to totally lose him-self in her sweet depths.

*****

Aeryn looked at Crichton before motioning for Zhaan to step outside the room. Zhaan nodded and walked hurriedly into the corridor unaware of the small eavesdropper hiding in a vent near the medical bay.

"Zhaan, it's him. I saw his eyes. I mean it was in his eyes...It wasn't John. Frell...am I making any sense." Aeryn rubbed her weary eyes one hand propped on her hip searching for a way to tell Zhaan what had happened in Crichton's quarters.

"You mean Scorpius." Zhaan whispered her eyes darting furtively around the corridor.

"Yes." Aeryn hissed. "For an instant, before John started bleeding, his eyes they were so cold and mocking--so unlike Crichton's eyes Zhaan--even the color wasn't..." Aeryn's hands dropped to her side unable to describe what she had seen.

"It wasn't Crichton." Zhaan finished for her.

Aeryn nodded, near tears, afraid for John.

"Zhaan, I think it, I mean he--I think he knows, I ...didn't say anything but I think it suspects we know about it and that is why...that's why John is so ill now...I think it's trying to kill him." Aeryn rubbed her arms trying to ward off the chilling fear invading her.

Zhaan reached out to comfort Aeryn. Her pain and indecision a beacon to her hidden emotions for John that ran much deeper. Together they walked back into the infirmary, Aeryn leaning on Zhaan for support as they approached the examine table where John was fighting for his life.

"He looks so--alone," Aeryn observed.

"I know...but we are here with him and I think he knows he isn't alone. The test results we discussed earlier should be ready." Zhaan told Aeryn walking over to the holograph imager and switching it on. Aeryn looked down at John again; smoothed the wrinkles from his brow and left his side to join Zhaan at the imager.

Zhaan whispered to Aeryn, "You were right...note the light blue color on the holograph. That material is this imposter RNA. The computers have isolated it from his tissue that conforms to scans taken prior to going to the Gamek base. The problem is how to get it out. The only thing I know about John's brain is that the left side operates the right side of his body and vice versa. According to him when humans injure their brains or spinal cord severely it leads to death, coma, or impaired functioning of their body."

"What is this coma?" Aeryn queried studying the holograph intensely.

"He said it was similar to your living death, except sometimes humans heal enough and wake up from it...but it is not always so." Zhaan told her.

"Do you think we can remove it?" Aeryn whispered.

"We have the tools for such a procedure...however it would take much preparation and time to study and practice the attempt on models. Time John may not have if this thing is killing him." Zhaan said.

"I may be able to do it Zhaan. Pilot's reminant DNA allows me to learn things a bit faster than I use to. Give me 3 arn to prepare. Can you keep him sedated for that long?" Aeryn asked her.

"Yes...I can." Zhaan told her hurrying off to prepare a sedative for John. Aeryn queried Moya's medical data banks for the necessary equipment and data to perform and inter-cranium operation.

"I'm telling you they said Scorpius was inside of Crichton's brain. I heard them talking in the hallway." Rygel told Chiana and D'Argo, who were both considering beating the hezmana out of the little Hynerian for interrupting them while they were making love.

"Rygel we all know John is suffering from space madness. His species is not use to long periods of time away from each other in space. Except for an elite few like John, they are planet bound." Chiana chirped in.

"Yes Rygel like I told you earlier leave the man alone. Now if you will excuse me, I'm busy." D'Argo told him before drawing the coverlet back over his and Chiana's heads.

"Humph." Rygel harrumphed. "The least you could do is wait for me to leave the room. Have you no shame!" Rygel sped from the room after a low moan erupted from under the coverlet proving to him they could care less whether he was there or not.

After several moments Chiana poked her head from beneath the coverlet.

"Okay, he's gone." She told D'Argo.

D'Argo slid naked from beneath the covers, his desire evident. Chiana sighed and sat up, her head resting against the wall. She watched D'Argo as he dressed quickly and prepared to leave for the infirmary.

"I'll be right back." He told her, before striding from the room purposefully.

As soon as D'Argo's back disappeared from view, Chiana hopped from the mussed bed and grabbed her own clothing. Dressing hurriedly she climbed into the nearest maintenance shaft and headed for the vents abode the infirmary to find out was going on herself.

****

"Zhaan, Aeryn, what the hezmana is going on!" D'Argo demanded as he entered the infirmary to the sight of Zhaan helping Aeryn into strange looking garments and gloves.

"D'Argo would you please stop shouting or leave. Aeryn has to stay focused and she doesn't need your loud demands ringing in her head." Zhaan scolded him. "I will explain everything to you in a few minutes, just let her get started...the sedative will only be effective for two more arn and I can't risk giving it to John again because of the serious side effects it has from overuse. It is highly addictive."

Zhaan guided Aeryn to a strange menagerie of equipment some attached to John's now shaven skull and some hovering over it. One contained a long probe of some sort stopped just shy of John's head.

D'Argo nodded and left the room pacing the hallway beyond it.

"Aeryn are you ready?" Zhaan asked her.

"Yes...according to the data this should take anywhere from one to two arn. I hope it's enough time..." Aeryn's voice drifted off as she calibrated the virtual reality visor on her head to that of the micro scanner placed on John's scalp mapping his brain cavity.

"There all set. Wish me luck." She smiled quickly not at all as confident as she sounded.

"I will go and talk to D'Argo now. If you need anything or me..." Zhaan left the rest unfinished and hurried from the room as the probe began to advance towards John's skull.

****

"So you see D'Argo. If we can not remove this foreign tissue that we feel is programmed with Scorpius personality John will never be safe...and neither will we," she added.

"If it is there as you say, I am surprised it hasn't tried to kill all of us." D'Argo stated.

"I know, I know. Apparently as John's grip on reality slips...this thing gains more and more control of his conscious functions. It would only be a matter of time before..." Zhaan left the rest of her revelation unsaid.

D'Argo placed a finger over his mouth, motioning for Zhaan to be silent. He jumped, punching the vent overhead, causing it to cave in no longer able to support Chiana weight she fell towards the floor with a squeal. D'Argo and Zhaan hurried over to her helping her up. D'Argo sighed in disgust and walked away heading towards his quarters alone. When would she learn to be honorable in her actions? She did not need to skulk about, eaves dropping in ventilation systems. He muttered and veered away from his quarter's entrance and headed to command to talk with Pilot about what he thought about Zhaan and Aeryn's discovery.

*****

Sweat began to bead up on Aeryn's forehead...an arn had already passed since she began the operation. The probe was systematically identifying and destroying the foreign brain matter as Aeryn guided it through the vr visor. There was more of it than showed on the scan. It had fibrous tendons reaching into different areas of John's brain. Each of the tendons had to be destroyed as well to prevent a chance of the 'Scorpy cancer' as she had named it from returning. Aeryn took a deep breath and plunged on disconnecting tendon after tendon until only the mass of tissue was left. Carefully she began to excise it from the surrounding brain matter. Once that was done she injected it with a cell fixater to prevent it from trying to reattach itself to John's brain. Carefully she began to burn it away with the micro probe until not a cell of it remained. She did several scans to be certain all of it was gone.

Elated for the success of the operation and tired from the immense mental and physical effort to guide the micro probe her body began to tremble violently. Zhaan was there leading her away from the equipment and sitting her down at another exam table. Zhaan disconnected the equipment from John's body and placed a small bandage over the small dot of an incision on his forehead. Zhaan spun around in shock as loud un-lady like snores began to emanate from the other bed in the infirmary. Chuckling she walked over and removed the vr visor and gloves from Aeryn's sleeping form and covered her up with a thermal sheet.

****

"Ugh my head is 'killing' me," John moaned, struggling to sit up.

"It's alright John. Lay back down." Zhaan coaxed him in a soothing voice while pushing him back down onto the bed.

"Zhaan what are you doing in my room. Last thing I remember...I was...I was...I was going to my quarters after my shift at command," he murmured.

"We are in the infirmary John. You have been very ill. But you should feel better soon." Zhaan told him while she gave adjusted his twisted and mussed sheets so he would be more comfortable.

John moaned as a loud snore reverberated around in his skull, causing the pain in his temple to increase.

"What the hell...who is that making that gawd awful noise," he whined cradling his head and ears.

Zhaan chuckled, "Aeryn is very tired John. You should show more appreciation for what she did for you."

"What did she do...can you get me some water please?" He asked.

"Of course," Zhaan told him, hurrying away to retrieve a cup of cool water for him.

"Here you go," she told him. Helping him sit up enough to sip the cool beverage.

"So why is Aeryn so tuckered out?" John asked.

"John...it's a long story and I don't really think you are strong enough yet to hear it all. In a few microts you will be sleepy again and won't remember this conversation anyway." Zhaan informed him as his eyes drifted close and the sedative she had added to his water kicked in.

****

Several solar days later....

"So... you are saying that I had a Scorpy implant in my brain, and that is why I was hallucinating and talking to myself all the time." John laughed trying to shake off the feeling of having been somehow violated in the worse way.

"It's not funny John. There is no telling what that thing was capable of." Aeryn told him sternly.

John looked around his quarters a vague memory tugging at his conscious. Shrugging he patted the side of his bed and motioned for Aeryn to sit down. Smiling as she remembered doing the same thing a weekun prior Aeryn sat down and sighed.

"We were very worried about you," Aeryn began only to be cut off by the touch of John's mouth on hers, as he kissed her gently--the contact so brief she wasn't sure it had happened. Touching her fingers to her lips she looked at him questionably.

"Thank you," he said softly reaching up to gently move some of the long silky strands of hair from her face, tucking it neatly behind her ear.

Touched by the act, Aeryn captured his hand before he could withdraw and placed a kiss in his palm, closing his fingers around the place where she had touched his skin.

"You need to rest," she told him, unable to hide the longing in her voice.

"Alone?" he asked her tugging her hand gently to prevent her from standing.

Aeryn allowed John to draw her into his arms. His hot mouth placing heated kisses along her brow and cheek before returning to her lips. His tongue hot and probing forced away the last of her reserves as it explored her mouth and began to tease and caress her tongue to join the play.

Moaning Aeryn deepened the kiss, her arms snaking up to wrap around John's neck pulling him closer, needing to be closer still.

"Oh Aeryn, baby, I've wanted this for so long," John told her as they helped each other out of their clothes.

Trailing the curve of her naked hip with one hand, his eyes locked with hers-- searching for any nervousness that might cause her to bolt as she had many times in the past--he continued his bold exploration of her body.

Aeryn moaned as liquid heat pooled deep inside her. Her breast tingled and grew heavy her nipples hardening into taunt peeks from his caresses. She watched him as he made love to her, afraid to close her eyes for fear the wonderful feelings would disappear, afraid it was only a dream, never had she known such pleasure and abandon in a lover.

John wasn't intent in technique only giving pleasure as good as he got. Aeryn reveled in it--this power she had to make him moan and buck beneath her as she kissed, caressed, and touched him intimately. Soon all thoughts were gone and instinct took over and they merged into one being, joined in a dance as old as time, lovers clasped together in a heat of passion and desire that transcended time. Their moans and little gasps of pleasure echoed around the room, unheard by them as they made love, giving all and receiving all from the other.
