A Simple Moment
They sat there not speaking. Both afraid that if they dared say anything, the whole scene would shatter upon them. They were sharing a simple moment. A time of peace in the chaotic mess they called their lives. They needed this time, to simply exist, together. Words only complicated things. You just need to keep it simple.
They'd been there for arns. Setting a distance apart in the beginning, they were now together. Using the closeness as a shield to block out everything that they'd been going through. His arms around her, his fingers playing softly with her hair. Her hand moving lightly in his. If true perfection's touch were ever to be felt by living beings, this was the moment it would choose.
How many times have they been like this? They both knew that it wasn't nearly enough. Between the danger of death, a slipping sanity, and a scared little girl, chances came so rarely. They both knew that there might not be any more chances one day. But right now, the didn't care. Worry, doubt ,and regret had no place here. They were too complicated.
She stirred in his arms, turning to face him. He saw the fear in her eyes, seeking comfort in his. Leaning down, he brushed his lips briefly on her forehead. He then lowered his forehead to hers in silent vow of love and protection. Understanding, she closed her eyes to burn this moment into her memory.
The felt the loss as the bullet hit andshattered the glass scene. Pilot's urgent voice informed them that reality had return. Slowly and with much sadness, they stood up, still touching. Holding on to one last shred of peace, they looked into each other's eyes. They didn't need to say it aloud. Again. They would do this again.
Breaking eye contact, John Crichton and Aeryn Sun turned and ran towards Command.
